How to put both sides of an ID in one PDF

Many forms ask for a copy of your ID with the front and the back in the same file. You can do it with your phone's camera, without a scanner.

How to do it with your phone

  1. Put the card on a dark, flat surface, like a wooden table, in good light. Don't use the flash.
  2. Open aval Workspace in your phone's browser and tap Scan. There's nothing to install.
  3. Take a picture of the front. The corners should sit on the edges of the card. If one is off, drag it into place.
  4. Turn the card over and take a picture of the back.
  5. Choose Color if the form asks for a color copy. If it doesn't, Grayscale gives a lighter file that still reads well.
  6. If you only need the file to send it now, turn on “Temporary: deletes itself after an hour”.
  7. Tap Create the PDF. You get one PDF with the front on page 1 and the back on page 2.

If you already have the photos

In Scan, tap Choose photos and pick both, the front first. aval straightens them the same way as if you had just taken them. If they're already PDFs, upload them and use Merge to put them in one file in the order you want.

If the form wants both sides on the same page

Some forms ask for the front and the back on a single page. aval can't do that yet, because each side goes on its own page. If the form insists, photocopy both sides on one sheet of paper and scan that sheet with aval.

How to get a copy that reads well

  • Don't use the flash. The plastic on the card reflects it and hides the numbers.
  • Get close enough for the card to fill most of the picture, but leave some table around it so aval can find the edges.
  • Before sending it, check that you can read the number and see the photo. If you can't, take the picture again.
  • If the file is too heavy for the form, compress it. An ID in grayscale rarely needs more than a few hundred kilobytes.

How to take care of the copy

With a copy of your ID, someone could try to do paperwork in your name. These three things lower the risk.

  • Add a watermark that says what the copy is for, for example "Only for the rental application, October 2026". aval has a Watermark tool.
  • Scan it as temporary, or use Mark as temporary afterwards, so the copy doesn't stay saved after you send it.
  • Send it only through the form or to the person who asked for it, not to group chats.
